For our country to become a wealthy and powerful nation, development of scientific technology is of primary importance. Basic science must be supported in order to achieve scientific development. Basic science cannot exist without mathematics. National Institute for Mathematical Sciences is an institution that activates mathematical researches on the national level and was initially composed of three divisions including Foundational Mathematics Division, Interdisciplinary Mathematics Division and Industrial Mathematics Division.
Foundational Mathematics Division is independently operated for development of pure mathematics that becomes the foundation of all applied mathematics. The division will place efforts for popularization of mathematical science and development of mathematical education. Interdisciplinary Mathematics Division conducts studies on fusion fields with adjacent academic subjects such as physics, life science and economics and has the role of a bridge between different educational disciplines. Industrial Mathematics Division will become a connection with the industry by conducting researches on industrial applications of mathematics such as telecommunication, finance and encryption.
To realize such goals, the Institute will select and support postdoctoral researchers within the scope of its budget every year and induce educational research activities with distinguished scholars of each field. Fixed human resource of the Institute will be minimized in order to manage a flexible organization by maximizing the inducement of research scholars, postdoctoral researchers and visiting researchers.
In addition, NIMS will expand its role in the field of mathematical science by composing a network with various learning societies such as Korean Mathematical Society and Korean Physical Society and with various universities, by creating a research exchange network with other research institutions like Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology and Agency for Defense Development, and by organizing aid associations with private individuals and corporations.
NIMS that had been born as a government subscribed research institution true to its name will place best possible efforts to make contributions for development of scientific technologies, industry and economy of our nation by accelerating on research and collaboration with sense of duty.
